Trip Report

Approximately 25 minutes south of Zihuatanejo at the southern end of Playa Larga next to the wildlife sanctuary lagoon, you’ll find a small Mexican beachside village, Barra de Potosi.  Unlike a number of “high energy” beach resorts in Mexico, Barra de Potosi is a quiet, quaint, unassuming community where one can simply relax in a hammock or walk the 9.5 mile isolated beach lined with lush palm trees gently swaying in the ocean breeze.

Karen and I recently stayed at one of the many available small bungalows nestled amongst the coconut groves, Playa Potosi Resort (www.playapotosi.com). We were welcomed by Maxine and Ralph, a Canadian couple, who own and operate the charming four unit facility complete with a swimming and lap pool, outdoor kitchen, several palapas and beautiful lush gardens.

Just steps from the beach, one can enjoy a swim in the clean surf, walk the long beach into town, kayak the lagoon, hire a fishing boat or simply relax around the pool. Barra de Potosi is the home to a 4.5 mile saltwater lagoon bird and wildlife sanctuary.  Kayaks and small boats are available for sightseeing.

There are a number of Enramadas (beach restaurants) where you can get local Mexican food and a cold drink.  Or, if you prefer to do your own cooking, stop by the Tienda (small store), Tortillia outlet and Pallo’s (local fisherman) for fresh fruits, vegetables, seafood and tortillas.

Experience Barra de Potosi for a tranquil and restful escape where every evening you are treated to yet another spectacular sunset.
